The HP88 auto reset chips come in two types:
- Black (K) dependent
- Independent or non-dependent
Resetting Black (K) dependent chips
Wait until one or more of the cartridges is indicating that it is empty (flashing cartridge symbol on K5400/K8600 or message on L7x80) then:
- Turn the printer off.
- Wait for 10 seconds
- Turn the printer back on
- The cartridge levels should reset to full.
Resetting Independent / Non-dependent chips
These chips require you to wait until the cartridge you wish to reset is actually showing as “empty”. You cannot reset the chips when the printer indicates that ink levels are low.
Resetting itself is as follows:
- Open the cartridge bay door/hatch
- Pull the “empty” cartridge out about an inch (so the chip is no longer connected)
- Wait 10 seconds
- Push the cartridge back into its slot
- Repeat for any other “empty” cartridges
- Close the cartridge bay door/hatch
The printer will usually take a few seconds to recognise the cartridge chip as reset after which it will display a full indicator and allow you to print again.
Troubleshooting
If your cartridge levels do not reset by following these procedures, please refer to the other articles in the KB/FAQ relating to HP Officejet printers.
